il situe une action passée antérieure à celle énoncée au simple past (ou prétérit)

past simple -----------> prétérit ----------------> présent

1- I spent the weekend at my grandparents' after I had finished my work.

2- The athletes had changed their shoes before they participated the race.

3- The computer user configured the software that he had downloaded from the Internet.

4- At 1: 26 pm, the firefighters eventually put out the fire which had started early in the morning.
