  • 'The Catcher in the Rye' is a book I read recently and moved me greatly, mainly because of the similarities between me and the protagonist. Written in the early 1950s by J.D. Salinger, it recounts the tale of Holden Caulfield, a disaffected American teenager. The book deals with a number of themes, including sexuality and captures the difficult time we face as we grow up and try to become adults. Holden is from a wealthy East Coast background and, in the book, we follow him through a series of seemingly random encounters with the adult world in a day in New York, to where he has escaped from his home town after having been expelled from school. These encounters only seem to confuse him and his behaviour is sometimes clumsy. Interestingly, the only person with whom he can communicate is his ten-year-old sister, Phoebe. The book concludes with Holden missing his friends but unsure as to whether he wishes to return home. I think the feelings of frustration, bewilderment and fear that Holden feels are still feelings which young people today have. I recommend that you read the book; it's excellent.
